Blog Post 12/18

Today we went out and took pictures of places downtown and near here. We went to Millers, Les and Babes, The Clock, The Island, and the old high school that's Landon's apartments now. There was a lot of snow so we couldn't get as good of shots as we would if it was clear. Landon still got good pictures but we have a lot of other places to go.

Blog Post 12/11

Were doing our project on the old version of Eaton Rapids verse the present day version. We've planned out the specific places were gonna evaluate and what all were going to do. Now, we just have to take pictures. This is interesting because we have one project for the whole trimester that we come back to on occasion.

Visual Organizers

You could use these visual organizers in a class like English or any class really. Just to organize thoughts and categories. Juniors should use these websites to practice for ACT testing, seniors could use these websites to practice for finals or organizing outline rough drafts, and students in AP classes can use these websites to study for tests and the AP final.

Creative Commons

Creative commons image search is different from a Google image search because Google pulls up anything and everything that has to do with your search. Creative commons pulls up things your allowed to copy because they are under Fair Use.

It limits what pictures we can and cannot use because they might not be Fair Use.

Copyright Questions

1. What is Copyright?

Copyright is a form of protection for authors or creators of things such as literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works.

2. Why should I care about Copyright?

You want the right to control what people can and cannot do with your work, people would be upset if they worked hard and took time to create something and someone could take the credit for it.

3. Which works are protected by Copyright?

Copyright protects the original forms of work from authors that are fixed.

4. Which works are not protected by Copyright?

Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, concepts, discoveries, devices, titles, names, short phrases, slogans, works that are not fixed in a tangible form of expression, or works with common information that's available everywhere.

5. Who owns the Copyright in a work?

It is the property of the person who wrote or created it at the moment when it is put into fixed form.

6. What is Copyright infringement?

Anyone who goes against the exclusive Copyright laws without the owners permission commits this crime. They will have to pay back the money they made off the owners work.

7. When do I need permission to copy?

You should go on a case by case basis because just because it says "Fair Use" does not mean you wont be penalized for infringing.

8. How do I obtain Copyright protection?

You immediately and automatically have Copyright protection when the work is created.

9. When and how do I register a Copyright?

You register with the Copyright Office any time before the term of copyright expires.

10. How long does Copyright protection last?

Copyright protection starts from the moment the work is created and goes on until 70 years after the death of the author or creator. When the Copyright expires the work falls into public domain and anyone can copy and use it without permission.

How do Copyright laws relate to your work in Digital Media?

We use A LOT of pictures and phrases and works of art in our projects. Copyright not only pertains to us when we use things off the internet to incorporate in our work, it also pertains to use when we create a piece of work. We sit here long hours and work hard on the things we create, it would be unfair if someone could use our work next year or next trimester and get credit for it.

09/06 Writing Prompt

In my opinion I don’t believe schools should block websites on the internet. For the most part, students always figure out how to get around them, there are certain websites teachers use for classes that may be blocked, and when we are on computers there is always a teacher around.
Some people and most of our staff believe that students aren’t responsible enough to stay on task and do what were supposed to be doing on the computers. They believe we’ll wander off onto different websites, maybe get on Facebook or Twitter. On the other hand, at some point in life were going to have to learn self-control, how will we learn how to be responsible if it’s not instilled into our everyday routine?
Many students already disagree with the rules in the high school. Were old enough to know right from wrong and were also old enough to know the tricks and trades of our generation. A lot that the teachers and staff in the high school don’t know, students can eventually figure out. There are ways around fire walls  and blocked websites and a lot of teenagers are computer savvy. Also, they block websites that we can easily obtain from our phones or home computers.
These websites teachers use may have something little that isn’t allowed and it gets blocked from school computers, then they make us do it at home. Its more complex to remember what all has to be done when we get home from practice or a game, we may not have time and that just adds extra to our schedules. Teachers get frustrated just like we do. It doesn’t always benefit the teachers, the students, or our education when most of the websites we need are blocked.
When we have projects or assignments to do on the computer most of it is done in class unless you don’t finish. There is always someone there if you have a question or need help. So, if were always with a teacher and are supervised when we have computer access anyway, then why are certain things blocked. Students understand the extremes, like violent or sexual websites, but everything else doesn’t really pertain to our interests.
So, in conclusion, students in high school are old enough to know if the website they’re  on is wrong or if they’re breaking the rules. We have teachers around us all the time, teachers need some of the websites to use in their curriculum, and some students are able to find ways around the firewall anyways. Giving us a chance to show that we can get used to doing the right thing may be a positive change in our high school.

Paragraph

I have never used blog before. It's new but it seems easy to use. It will make turning in work more simple and I think more teachers should use it. I never noticed it was there before. Hopefully it starts getting used more.
